A landscape shaped by human activity
Extending for around 7000 hectares between Valle del Cornia and Pecora, in an area straddling the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto, the Montioni Nature Park includes two state-owned nature reserves: Marsiliana (440 hectares) and Poggio Tre Cancelli (100 hectares).
These hills, covered above all by holm oaks, are closely linked to human activity, above all, the production of coal and tree felling.
Other signs of human activity in the heart of the park include the remains of the alum quarries (used for tanning and fixing dyes on fabrics) and the ruins of the Napoleonic period village commissioned by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister.
