A story of nature and ancient trades
The small town of Sassetta in the Province of Livorno, dating back to around 1000 AD, is perched on the rock overlooking the Pian delle Vigne to the east and the Valle del Cornia to the south.
The hill is surrounded by the magnificent holm oaks, manna-ashes and chestnut trees of the Poggio Neri Forestry Park, that covers a total surface area of 735 hectares and has 37 km of trails that can be followed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.
The “Museum in the Wood” has been created along one of the trails in the Park: an outdoor exhibition of the tools used in the ancient trades of the forest, with the perfect and meticulous reconstruction of the world of the charcoal burners. Here, the ancient charcoal burners of Sassetta wrote their life stories, in symbiosis with nature.
